Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

If you have a newer vehicle, it’s likely that you have an electronic oil monitor instead of a dipstick therefore, it’s important to consult your owner’s manual prior to checking your oil. If you do have a dipstick, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground and that the engine is turned off and cold.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

Dipsticks usually have a mark to indicate the correct oil level. If you notice the top of the oil streak is between the two marks, your level is correct. If not, add more oil immediately.

Check your owner’s manual to be sure that you are using the correct grade of oil in the vehicle. Add a small bit of oil at a time until the dipstick indicates its at the correct level.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

There are a few important reasons you need to check your vehicle’s oil level. Checking car oil is essential to your vehicle’s safe operation. You should get your oil changed at least twice per year, however, this depends on the type of car and driving habits. You should check your oil once per month so you know there are no leaks, and you have enough oil for your McAllen and Edinburg drives. However, if you notice that your vehicle’s hood is too hot and steam is emitting from the engine, it’s best to schedule service with Burns Motors, as the engine is overheating.
