What Does Dodge R/T Stand For, You Ask?

2021 Dodge Charger Models at the Track

“R/T” stands for Road and Track, a nomenclature that signifies when a Dodge is not a specialized track or drag racing machine, but still a performance step above a standard vehicle. Any Dodge can accomplish the daily commute in style, safety, and comfort, but those adorned with the R/T badge are capable of more. Simply put, R/T vehicles are the perfect combination of standard Dodge amenities and just enough SRT sauce to transform running around Mission from a chore into an adventure.

History of “Road and Track

Continuity builds heritage, and the heritage of R/T is based on continuity that goes all the way back to the 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T. That brutish muscle car paved the way for the more refined yet considerably faster Dodge R/T vehicles of today, with dozens of entries throughout the years in between. While performance has always been a staple of the brand, what has always set R/T vehicles apart was attitude. Not commuter cars, but not pure racers either, R/T vehicles have always had a practical bent that few manufacturers could ever match. This everyman status lent itself to R/Ts frequently appearing in films from the 70’s into the present, as both hero and villain. That same attitude is just as present on the streets of Edinburg as it is on the silver screen.

R/T vs. SRT

Street & Racing Technology, or SRT, trims are the hardcore speed machines of the Dodge lineup. The R/T trim package is less specialized than SRT, and thus offers less outright performance, but also less cost. In terms of performance, R/T vehicles offer a middle ground between the full-on performance of SRT and the quiet comfort of everyday cars. R/T trims are available on the following vehicles:

  • Dodge Challenger
  • Dodge Charger
  • Dodge Durango

Road and Track Performance Upgrades

The mechanicals that match the R/T model’s looks with more intense performance vary on the exact vehicle, but the Challenger, Charger, and Durango R/T models all have these in common:

  • HEMI® Engines: The power and sound of these large displacement V8s unmistakably make any R/T a true American muscle car, or muscle truck in the Durango’s case.
  • Brembo Braking: High performance stopping power and heat dissipation help drivers maintain control of these powerful vehicles.
  • Aerodynamic Design: The scoops, spoilers, and other bodywork on R/T models aid engine cooling and high speed stability.
